The Knights Templar are the most well-known of the Medieval religious orders that arose during the Crusades. They were monks ‘licensed to kill’ and were ruled by knighthood and monasticism. This talk will cover their origins, evolving objectives and organisation, landholding and the ways in which they exploited themselves. Surviving buildings will be discussed and the background to the suppression of the order in the early 14th Century.
Meet at 7.30 p.m. The Apostle Room, Clifton Cathedral, Pembroke Road, Bristol, BS8 3BX.
