Summer Walks for 2015

SUNDAY 5 JULY

SUBURBAN WALK:  BISHOPS KNOLL WOOD – led by Bev Knott

An enjoyable stroll around the visible late 19th century “lost” gardens of Bishop’s Knoll House. Meet at the entrance which is on Bramble Lane, off Church Road, Stoke Bishop at 2:30 pm. Free street parking is available on Bramble Lane. In wet weather suitable footwear for woodland walking is recommended. Some slopes are steep and a steadying walking stick may be helpful. Bev’s mobile number on the day is: 07989 568213.

SATURDAY 25 JULY

URBAN WALK:  REDCLIFFE –  led by Bob Jones

We will meet at 2.00pm at St Mary Redcliffe outside the north porch and consider the complex history of this fine building. By using James Millerd’s map of 1673 (copies will be supplied) we will walk through Redcliffe looking at the changing face of Redcliffe from a crowded industrial quarter specialising in cloth working to an equally industrial area in the 18th and 19th century, with glass making, brewing and tobacco industries predominating. Some of the surviving sites will be visited in the course of the tour, including, if possible, the ruins of Temple Church.

Bob’s mobile number on the day is: 07746 101106.

SUNDAY 26 JULY

FESTIVAL OF ARCHAEOLOGY:  BLAISE ESTATE

‘BRISTOL’S BRILLIANT ARCHAEOLOGY’ organised by Bristol Museum throughout the day. BAAS is not putting on anything specific this year but many related organisations are and it should be a very active day.

SUNDAY 2 AUGUST

FIELD TRIP:  PRIDDY NINE BARROWS/ASHEN HILL; TOTTY POT MESOLITHIC BURIAL CAVE  – led by Dr Paula Gardiner

A walk to the Bronze Age barrows at Ashen Hill/ Priddy Nine Barrows to look at the barrows in their landscape setting.  This is followed by a visit to the Mesolithic burial site at the Totty Pot swallet hole (at the top of Cheddar Gorge).  The walk to the Nine Barrows is across a grassy field with an uphill slope (5 mins); the walk to Totty Pot is up a steep, stony track way (10 mins).

Parking is limited at both sites.  We will meet at 2.00 p.m. in the car park at Burrington Coombe so that we can share cars and reduce the number being taken to the sites.  If there is time on our return, we can also visit the entrance to Aveline’s Hole (Mesolithic burial cave in which rock art has been found).

Priddy Nine Barrows: ST539512; Totty Pot: ST483534.

Paula’s mobile number on the day is: 07980 478437.

SUNDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER

Meet at Red Lodge at 2:00 pm. Car parking available at the multi-storey in the adjacent Trenchard Street. Andrew’s mobile number on the day is: 07811 314425.
