Founded by the Romans in AD75 as a market town for the defeated Silures tribe large sections of the Roman town wall remain in place, to a height of 5 metres in some areas making Caerwent as the most impressive Roman town defence in Britain. The ruins of several Roman buildings are extant including the foundations of a 4th century Roman temple with a temenos area.
