Before the Industrial Revolution, most towns were major centres of production, frequently controlled by all-powerful guilds. Many industries were small-scale, conducted at the level of the individual household, but frequently crucial to the economic life of the town. This talk will look mainly at the archaeological evidence for industries (some of which were mentioned during the recent walk round Redcliffe) but will also consider some of supporting documentary sources.
