FIELDTRIP TO THE MENDIPS led by Dr. Paula Gardiner

On Sunday August 2, 2015
Paula Gardiner
Walk

A walk to the Bronze Age barrows at Ashen Hill/ Priddy Nine Barrows to look at the barrows in their landscape setting.  This is followed by a visit to the Mesolithic burial site at the Totty Pot swallet hole (at the top of Cheddar Gorge).  The walk to the Nine Barrows is across a grassy field with an uphill slope (5 mins); the walk to Totty Pot is up a steep, stony trackway (10 mins).

Parking is limited at both sites.  We will meet at 2.00 p.m. in the car park at Burrington Coombe (adjacent to the Burrington Inn) so that we can share cars and reduce the number being taken to the sites.  If there is time on our return, we can also visit the entrance to Aveline’s Hole (Mesolithic burial cave in which rock art has been found).

Priddy Nine Barrows: ST539512; Totty Pot: ST483534.
